You Can Make Excuses or You Can Make It Happen

Time and time again you hear people complain about why people can’t do something. They don’t have time being one of the biggest. I believe this is rubbish. If you really want something bad enough you will find time to do the things that have to be done to achieve it. It is just a matter of priority. You don’t have time because you choose to do something else instead. People will say “yeah but I have to work”. This is true but if you want to achieve a goal you could get up earlier and do something that will get you there before heading to work or you could do it straight after work. “Oh but I’m too tired after work”. Well you don’t want to achieve your goal bad enough.

 

There are so many things that are in our control but we don’t want to see it. A lot of things that happen in your life are because of the choices you make, not because of bad luck or because you are hard done by. If you get lung cancer and you have smoked for 30 years, well it isn’t really bad luck it is because you made the choice to smoke instead of care for your health. Now, I know bad things that aren’t in your control do happen, I am just saying that there are many things that we do actually have control over. Controlling what you eat is a good example. No food forces itself inside you. If you are overweight there is probably a fair reason why.

 

There are times when I am tired and don’t want to train, just like everyone else. The difference is I will get myself up and get it done. I have things I want to achieve and I ask myself this simple question “will this behaviour/choice help me achieve my goal?” I have no grey. It is a yes or a no. If it is a no then I do not do it.

 

For example, the other day, I woke up early as I do, went to work, drove 2 hours in traffic, done 2 sessions of jiu jitsu, travelled home and got caught in traffic again which ended up taking me 2.5 hours to get home, I hadn’t eaten since 11am, and I had to train deadlifts with chains. By the time I got home I was tired, angry from the traffic, and tired. But I decided to do my session anyway as I know it will help me get closer to my goal. I thought I would train like crap as I normally train in the morning, haven’t sat in a car for 4.5 hours beforehand, and normally eat much closer to my work out. I could have found a heap of excuses not to lift. “You will get injured from sitting so much, you are tired, you could overtrain etc. etc.” Funny thing is, I smashed my sessions and felt way better than the previous week.

 

Instead of finding a way out, find a way in. You’ll be glad you did.
